Music

"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent. "  Victor Hugo

Intent

At St Anne's, we believe that music is integral in the development of the whole child.  Teaching enables pupils to experience diverse and rich opportunities from which they learn and develop a range of transferable skills, for example communication skills, pattern spotting and relaxation opportunities.  Through the Music curriculum, pupils explore creativity and expression using different instruments (including voice), techniques and technology to create musical compositions. Children focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that they need in order to become confident composers, performers and listeners.

  • We want to inspire children to be life-long music lovers
  • All children have the opportunity to be inspire others by performing for other pupils and the wider school community, whether that be at the end of our Trafford Music Service Wider Opportunities program, during assemblies or even performing in venues such as The Waterside Arts Theatre. We want these experiences to help our pupils aspire to continue to be musical after they have left St. Anne's.
  • Our music curriculum encourages pupils to be inquisitive  - we allow time for our children to listen carefully to pieces of music of varying genres, giving them opportunity to reflect on what they have heard and ask questions.

  • Our music curriculum provides children with the opportunity to learn different musical instruments. Through this, our pupils not only enhance their musical abilities but also develop our St. Anne's Learning Powers (Resilience, Perseverance, Resourcefulness and Co-Operation).
  • Pupils at St. Anne's have the opportunity to play together - collaborating with other musicians in an ensemble can be challenging and requires effective communication, teamwork and a positive mindset

  • Composing, playing, or listening to music allows individuals to process and regulate their emotions, promoting positive and healthy relationships, emotional wellbeing, and allowing us to take time to care for ourselves. It can also give us time to be mindful and present in the moment.
  • Learning an instrument or mastering musical skills requires dedication, discipline, and patience. These qualities are transferable to other aspects of life, both in and out of school, and can contribute to personal growth and resilience.
  • Music has the power to bring people together. Participating in musical events with Trafford Music Service or performing in our church, for example, can create a sense of belonging and strengthen community ties, promoting a supportive and caring environment for all.

  • Physical and mental wellbeing is of great importance in our music curriculum. The children are provided with opportunities to relax and opportunities to use their bodies, for example through body percussion exercises.
  • Learning about different musical traditions and styles fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, promoting empathy and respect.

Implementation

At St Anne's we use a combination of Kapow, Trafford Music Service Wider Opportunities programme and musical performances to cover the National Curriculum for Music.  Kapow is a music scheme which provides teachers with detailed lessons, progression and engaging resources.  The scheme follows a holistic approach to music in which the 5 strands (performing, listening, composing, the history of music and the inter-related dimensions of music) are woven together to create engaging and enriching learning experiences.  Each unit combines these strands within a cross-curricular topic - such as the Ancient Egyptians or Rainforests - which encourages the children to explore music with enthusiasm. It also follows the spiral curriculum model where previous skills and knowledge are returned to and built upon. All of this is supplemented by regular whole-school singing practices and music-related brain breaks such as clap-along rhythm activities.

Impact

Children talk about how much they enjoy their music lessons in school. They are aware of their current skills and have ideas about where they would like to take their learning next. Making use of our assessment tools, we will be able to observe a clear progression of skills throughout the school.
