Art and Design

'Getting lost in art allows children to find themselves!'

Intent

We will deliver engaging art lessons which will spark inspiration, generate enthusiasm, present challenges, and ignite a passion for artistic experimentation and creativity. We will equip our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to experiment, innovate, and independently create their own artworks, crafts, and designs.

As our students progress through the artistic journey, they will gain an increased awareness of their skill development establishing a more comprehensive understanding of art and design. These acquired skills will empower them to craft their own unique pieces. Throughout this process, our students will delight in the opportunity to appreciate and assess their own work, that of their peers and the artists and designers they will study, fostering a curiosity to explore how art can convey thoughts, opinions, and historical information about our cultures.

  • Our art curriculum is a canvas for inspiring pupils to cultivate clear aspirations for their future. Art empowers them to envision and pursue rich, meaningful lives, contributing positively to society.
  • Our art curriculum provides a structured framework that encourages exploration, curiosity and creativity. The development of skills such as observation, interpretation and self-expression nurture inquisitive minds that seek to engage with the world through the lens of art. We aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation for the beauty and diversity of God’s world.

    .

  • Art challenges children to foster a positive mindset and use our St. Anne’s Learning Powers. They will develop resilience and independent thinking through perfecting artistic skills and creating artwork which reflects their individually planned outcomes.
  • We aim to equip children with artistic vocabulary. We will enable them to articulately critique and express opinions about their own artwork, and that of the famous artists they will discover, using the language of art, craft and design

  • Our collaborative art projects encourage pupils to work together towards a common creative goal nurturing teamwork, communication, and mutual respect. Our art is proudly displayed within our school and the local community for a variety of audiences helping children form positive and healthy relationships within St. Anne's and beyond.

  • We will study artists and designers from a variety of cultural backgrounds. We will learn how their art has helped shape history and contributed to the creativity of our local, national and global community.
  • Through the many mindful moments of artistic exploration, children will find a greater understanding of themselves supporting physical and mental wellbeing.

Implementation

The Early Years Art and Design curriculum is delivered through the Statutory Framework's Expressive Arts and Design component. Within that children are introduced to a variety of tools and techniques including scissors, paintbrushes, pastels, and chalks. Through carefully crafted learning experiences, we guide them in mastering the effective use of these tools. Early Years will have a strong focus on vocabulary development, enabling children to express thoughts and opinions about their creations. To capture their creative journey we maintain a floor book and prominently display their work, celebrating their evolving skills and fostering a lifelong love for self-expression and creative exploration.

In Key Stage 1, our focus is on fostering creativity and artistic expression. Pupils are guided to use a diverse range of materials to design and make products, utilizing drawing, painting, and sculpture as mediums to share their ideas, experiences, and imagination. Emphasis is placed on developing a wide range of art and design techniques, encompassing color, pattern, texture, line, shape, form, and space. Additionally, pupils explore the work of various artists, craft makers, and designers, analyzing differences and similarities between practices and disciplines while establishing connections to their own creative endeavors.

As students progress to Key Stage 2, our objective is to deepen their artistic skills with creativity, experimentation, and an increased awareness of diverse art forms. Pupils are encouraged to create sketchbooks for recording observations, serving as a tool for reviewing and revisiting ideas. Mastery of art and design techniques is enhanced, covering drawing, painting, and sculpture with various materials like pencil, charcoal, paint, and clay. Furthermore, students delve into the study of great artists, architects, and designers throughout history, enriching their understanding of artistic traditions and influences.

Impact

The impact of art at St. Anne's is evident through our children's creation of high-quality art pieces that align with learning objectives. Progression is tracked through the evolving skills showcased in children's sketchbooks. Assessments are made at the end of each unit to inform future planning and ensure each child has the opportunity and support necessary to meet their goals.

Children will leave St. Anne’s equipped with skills, knowledge, confidence and creativity, giving them a strong foundation for learning during the next stage of their artistic journey. They will be able to produce creative work and have the vocabulary to evaluate and analyse it effectively. They will be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpting and craft. They will know about famous artists and designers and understand the cultural significance of their art.

 How do they help parents?

They give you a clear understanding of what your child will be learning about each term and allow you to support and further their knowledge at home if you wish to.
